Incheon Airport Self Bag Drop 2026: Who Can Use It and Why Your Bag Gets Rejected

Incheon Airport self bag drop machine rejecting a traveler’s checked suitcase

You chose self bag drop to avoid the check-in line, but the machine rejected your suitcase before the baggage tag was even accepted.

The problem may not be the machine.

A missing boarding pass, an oversized bag, an unpaid excess fee or a restricted route can send you straight back to the staffed counter.

Important:

A boarding pass alone does not guarantee that you can use Incheon Airport self bag drop. The passenger, route, airline and suitcase must all meet the operating carrier’s rules.

The fastest rule to remember

Self check-in: issues the boarding pass.

Self bag drop: tags and accepts eligible checked baggage.

Staffed counter: handles exceptions, payments, document checks and special baggage.

Information checked in July 2026:

Self bag drop airlines, counters, hours and passenger restrictions can change. Confirm the operating carrier and check the airport flight display on the day of departure.

Quick Answer

Incheon Airport self bag drop is available in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, but only for participating airlines and eligible passengers.

You must normally complete web, mobile, kiosk or automated check-in before using the machine.

Your suitcase must also stay within the free checked-baggage allowance and meet the airline’s standard baggage conditions.

You can usually use self bag drop when

  • Your operating airline offers the service in your departure terminal
  • Your boarding pass has already been issued
  • The suitcase is within the free baggage allowance
  • It is a standard suitcase rather than special baggage
  • No additional payment is required
  • No staff document check or special assistance is required
  • You arrive before the airline’s self bag drop deadline

Go directly to a staffed counter when

  • You need to pay for an extra or overweight bag
  • You are checking sports equipment, a stroller or oversized baggage
  • You are traveling with an infant, pet or unaccompanied minor
  • Visa or entry-document verification is still required
  • Your airline restricts the route or connecting itinerary
  • The machine repeatedly rejects the boarding pass or baggage tag

Check why the machine rejected your bag

Confirm the boarding pass, baggage allowance, suitcase size, route restrictions and operating time before joining the self bag drop line.

Which Airlines Have Self Bag Drop?

The machines are located on the third-floor departure level of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Do not choose a terminal based only on the airline’s nationality or alliance. Confirm the departure terminal shown on the current booking.

Check the screen on departure day:

The airport and Korean Air pages currently show different starting times for Korean Air self bag drop. Use the airline app, airport flight display and staff instructions for the final operating time.

The listed counter is a starting point, not a guarantee that every machine in that zone will be open.

Operating units can change according to booking volume, flight schedules and technical conditions.

Who Can Use Incheon Airport Self Bag Drop?

Answer five questions before joining the line.

1. Does the operating airline offer the service?

Check the airline that actually operates the flight.

A codeshare booking may display one airline’s flight number while another airline runs the aircraft and airport process.

2. Has the boarding pass been issued?

Self bag drop does not replace check-in.

Complete web, mobile, automated or kiosk check-in and obtain a valid boarding pass first.

3. Is the suitcase within the free allowance?

Check both the weight and the number of bags.

A ticket showing 1PC includes one piece. It does not automatically allow two lighter suitcases with the same combined weight.

Check the exact baggage allowance

Compare Korean Air, Asiana, Jeju Air, Jin Air and T’way Air checked-baggage rules before going to the machine.

Open the Korean Airline Baggage Comparison →

4. Is it a standard suitcase?

The airport’s general self bag drop guide states that accepted baggage must be under 90 cm in length.

Airline-specific wording can be stricter. T’way Air, for example, lists baggage exceeding 90 cm in any dimension among its restrictions.

Golf bags, sports equipment, strollers and other special items normally require a staffed or oversized-baggage counter.

5. Have all passenger and document checks been completed?

The airline may need to verify a visa, entry document, return ticket or passenger condition.

The machine can read a passport and boarding pass, but it cannot resolve every immigration or special-service requirement.

Important:

A valid boarding pass does not always mean every travel-document check is complete. The airline may still send you to a staffed counter for visa, entry-document or passenger verification.

How to Use Self Bag Drop Step by Step

Step 1. Complete check-in

Use the airline website, mobile app, automated check-in service or airport kiosk.

Confirm that the boarding pass shows the correct passenger name, flight number, date and destination.

Step 2. Scan the boarding pass and passport

Scan the boarding-pass barcode or QR code.

Then scan the passport photo page as directed by the machine.

Remove the passport from a thick cover when the scanner cannot read it.

Step 3. Place one suitcase on the belt

Place only your own suitcase on the machine.

Use one bag at a time and wait until the screen tells you to continue.

For light bags or bags with long straps, use the provided tub or ask the nearby assistant.

Step 4. Attach the baggage tag

Follow the animation shown on the screen.

Attach the tag around the handle and keep the main barcode flat and visible.

Do not cover the barcode with another sticker or fold it into the handle.

Step 5. Collect the claim receipt

The receipt or claim tag is issued after the suitcase starts moving on the conveyor.

Save it until the suitcase has been collected at the final destination.

  • Photograph the claim receipt
  • Check the final airport code
  • Keep the original paper receipt
  • Confirm that no error message remains on the screen

Correct order

Check in → scan boarding pass and passport → place one suitcase → attach tag → collect receipt → confirm baggage screening

Reasons Your Bag Gets Rejected

1. No boarding pass has been issued

The most basic rejection happens when check-in has not been completed.

A booking confirmation or itinerary is not a boarding pass.

No boarding pass → complete web, mobile or kiosk check-in first

2. A visa or travel-document check is required

Some routes require airline staff to verify visas, residence permits, onward tickets or entry forms.

The airline can also require an in-person identity or document check even after online check-in.

Go to the staffed counter when the screen instructs you to contact an agent.

3. The suitcase is overweight or an extra bag

The machine is designed to accept an eligible bag, not resolve every baggage payment.

It may reject the suitcase when:

  • The bag exceeds the ticket’s weight allowance
  • The ticket includes one piece but you have two
  • A membership allowance requires staff verification
  • An excess-baggage fee has not been paid

Important:

The machine may not process a bag that requires an additional-piece, overweight or oversized payment. Take the suitcase to the airline counter instead of repeatedly weighing it on the machine.

4. The bag is oversized or special baggage

A suitcase can be valid for air transport but unsuitable for the automated belt.

Common examples include:

  • Golf bags
  • Skis and snowboards
  • Bicycles
  • Surfboards
  • Strollers
  • Musical instruments
  • Very long or irregularly shaped bags

Rejected by the machine does not mean rejected by the airline:

A staffed counter may accept the item after checking the dimensions, fee and special-baggage procedure.

5. The route is restricted

Each airline publishes its own route restrictions.

Current examples include:

  • Asiana Airlines restricts passengers flying to the U.S.
  • T’way Air restricts Americas routes including Guam and Saipan
  • Other carriers may apply document or destination-specific restrictions

Do not assume that a machine working for one destination will accept passengers on every route operated by the airline.

6. The itinerary includes a restricted connection

Connecting flights can require staff to confirm the baggage destination and transfer agreement.

Several participating airlines restrict connecting passengers entirely.

Korean Air currently lists specific connecting routes that are not eligible for its self-service bag drop.

Take the full itinerary to the counter when the bag must be checked through another airline or separate ticket.

7. The passenger needs special handling

Staff assistance may be required for:

  • Passengers traveling with infants
  • Passengers traveling with pets
  • Unaccompanied minors
  • Wheelchair users
  • Passengers requiring an escort or airline assistance

The restriction is usually about completing the required passenger service, not about the suitcase itself.

8. The bag shape or baggage tag causes an error

The machine may stop when the suitcase is unstable or the barcode cannot be read.

Check the following:

  • Only one bag is on the belt
  • Long straps are secured
  • Light baggage is placed in the provided tub when instructed
  • The new barcode is flat and visible
  • Old flight tags have been removed
  • The suitcase is positioned as shown on the screen

9. The self bag drop counter is closed

A self check-in kiosk may remain available after the airline’s self bag drop service closes.

Self check-in available does not mean self bag drop is still open.

Many participating airlines stop accepting bags one hour before departure.

KLM’s current Incheon schedule closes self bag drop one hour and 20 minutes before departure.

Go to the staffed counter immediately when the machine area is closed or the flight is near its baggage deadline.

Terminal 1 Self Bag Drop Guide

Terminal 1 self bag drop machines are located around the third-floor departure check-in zones.

Confirm the exact counter letter before entering a long line.

T’way Air

  • Counter C
  • Listed hours: 05:00–20:00
  • Closes up to one hour before departure

T’way currently restricts Americas routes including Guam and Saipan, connecting passengers, infants, passengers requiring assistance and baggage outside the free allowance.

Oversized or special baggage should be taken to the staffed counter.

Eastar Jet

  • Counter G
  • Listed hours: 04:30–19:00
  • Closes up to one hour before departure

Passengers with connections, infants, excess baggage, sports equipment, strollers, pets or other assistance needs may be directed to a staffed counter.

Lufthansa and SWISS

Both airlines use machines around J19–J24, but their operating days and hours differ.

Lufthansa currently lists daily service with different starting times depending on the day.

SWISS currently lists selected morning hours on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Check the flight display because these schedules can follow the actual flight program.

Jeju Air

  • Counter L
  • Listed hours: 04:00–21:30
  • Closes up to one hour before departure

Jeju Air passengers must have a boarding pass and an eligible bag.

Special baggage and baggage requiring excess payment may need the staffed counter.

Terminal 2 Self Bag Drop Guide

Terminal 2 self bag drop machines are also located on the third-floor departure level.

Korean Air, Asiana, Jin Air, Air Seoul, Air France, KLM and Delta are currently listed.

Korean Air

  • Counter B
  • Airport page lists service from 05:00
  • Korean Air page lists service from 05:30
  • Service ends one hour before the final flight of the day

Korean Air limits self bag drop to passengers who completed self check-in and have baggage within the free allowance.

Passengers with infants, pets, unaccompanied minors, paid excess baggage or sports equipment need a staffed counter.

Some connecting itineraries are also restricted.

Asiana Airlines

  • Counters G and H
  • Official airline page lists G1–G16 and H1–H16
  • Listed hours: 04:40–19:30

Asiana limits the service to passengers with an Asiana boarding pass and baggage within the free allowance.

Passengers flying to the U.S., traveling with infants, connecting to another flight or paying excess baggage fees cannot use it.

Only bags up to 90 cm in length are accepted by Asiana’s self bag drop.

Jin Air and Air Seoul

Both currently use the F-counter area.

Jin Air lists service from 05:00 to 20:00.

Air Seoul lists service from 04:30 to 12:30.

Special baggage and passengers requiring assistance should use the staffed counter.

Air France, KLM and Delta

These airlines currently use the L-counter area.

Air France generally operates from three hours to one hour before departure.

KLM generally operates from four hours to one hour and 20 minutes before departure.

Delta instructs passengers to confirm the current operating hours with the airline.

What to Do After the Bag Moves Away

The suitcase disappearing on the conveyor does not always mean the complete baggage process is finished.

You still need the claim receipt and confirmation that the bag passed checked-baggage screening.

Terminal 1

Incheon Airport instructs passengers to wait nearby for about five minutes after checking baggage in Terminal 1.

Proceed only after the bag has passed X-ray screening and no staff member calls you back.

Terminal 2

In Terminal 2, follow signs to the designated confirmation area in the departure hall and check that the bag passed X-ray screening.

Asiana separately tells its self bag drop passengers to wait for five minutes after receiving the confirmation receipt.

Important:

Do not walk straight to passenger security the moment the suitcase disappears on the belt. Follow the terminal and airline instructions for confirming that the bag passed checked-baggage screening.

Save these before leaving the area

  • Baggage claim receipt
  • Photograph of the baggage receipt
  • Boarding pass
  • Passport
  • Confirmation that no screening problem remains

Prepare for passenger security

After the checked bag is cleared, review the security-screening procedure and restricted-item rules.

Smart Pass and Self Bag Drop Are Different

Smart Pass is Incheon Airport’s facial-recognition service.

Travelers register passport information, facial data and a boarding pass to use participating departure lanes and boarding gates.

It is not required for ordinary self bag drop.

Regular self bag drop

Boarding pass and passport scan

The passenger scans the required documents, attaches the baggage tag and sends the eligible suitcase through the machine.

Smart Pass self bag drop

Facial authentication for participating airlines

The airport currently lists Jeju Air, T’way Air, Jin Air and Air Seoul for the Smart Pass self bag drop function.

That list is narrower than the general self bag drop airline list.

Korean Air and Asiana passengers may use general self bag drop when eligible, even though the airport’s current Smart Pass self bag drop list names different carriers.

Do not confuse three services:

Smart Pass → facial recognition for participating airport checkpoints

Self check-in → boarding-pass issuance

Self bag drop → automated checked-baggage acceptance

What to Do If the Machine Rejects Your Bag

Do not restart the entire process several times without reading the error.

Step 1. Read or photograph the message

Take a clear photograph of the screen before it resets.

The message can help airline staff distinguish a document error from a baggage error.

Step 2. Check the weight

Compare the measured weight with the allowance shown in the booking.

Check the number of pieces as well as the total weight.

Step 3. Check the baggage type

Look at the longest dimension, shape, straps and special-baggage classification.

Move directly to a staffed or oversized-baggage counter when the item is not a standard suitcase.

Step 4. Check the route and passenger restrictions

Confirm whether the itinerary includes:

  • A restricted destination
  • A connecting flight
  • A codeshare carrier
  • An infant or special-service request
  • A pending visa or document check

Step 5. Ask the nearby assistant

Show the error message, passport, boarding pass and baggage allowance.

The assistant may reset the machine, correct the tag position or send you to the appropriate counter.

Step 6. Move to the staffed counter when required

Repeated scanning will not solve an unpaid fee, restricted route or required document check.

Do not keep restarting the machine:

When the error involves excess baggage, travel documents, a restricted route or special assistance, take the error message and baggage documents to the staffed airline counter.

Allow enough time for a backup plan

Self bag drop can save time only when there is enough time to move to a staffed counter after a rejection.

Do not arrive close to the one-hour baggage deadline and depend on the machine working immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every passenger use self bag drop at Incheon Airport?

No. The operating airline, route, baggage allowance and passenger conditions determine eligibility.

Which airlines offer self bag drop in Terminal 1?

The current airport list includes T’way Air, Eastar Jet, Lufthansa, SWISS and Jeju Air.

Which airlines offer self bag drop in Terminal 2?

The current list includes Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jin Air, Air Seoul, Air France, KLM and Delta Air Lines.

Do I need to check in before using self bag drop?

Yes. You normally need a boarding pass issued through web, mobile, automated or kiosk check-in.

Can I use self bag drop with an overweight suitcase?

Usually not when an excess-baggage payment is required. Take the bag to a staffed airline counter.

Why did the machine reject my baggage tag?

The barcode may be folded, covered or unreadable. The passenger, route or suitcase may also be ineligible for the service.

Can I use self bag drop for a U.S.-bound flight?

It depends on the airline. Asiana currently restricts U.S.-bound passengers, and T’way restricts Americas routes including Guam and Saipan.

Can I use it with a connecting flight?

Not always. Several airlines restrict connecting passengers because staff may need to verify the final baggage destination and transfer conditions.

Can I check a golf bag or stroller at the machine?

These items are normally treated as special baggage and should be taken to a staffed or oversized-baggage counter.

Can passengers with infants use self bag drop?

Many participating airlines restrict passengers traveling with infants and direct them to a staffed counter.

What is the 90 cm baggage rule?

Incheon Airport’s general guide states that self bag drop accepts baggage under 90 cm in length. Individual airlines may use additional dimensional conditions.

What should I do if the machine stops halfway?

Do not pull the suitcase from a moving belt. Photograph the error and ask the nearby airline assistant for help.

Do I need to wait after the suitcase moves away?

Yes. Follow the terminal’s checked-baggage screening instructions. Terminal 1 generally requires waiting nearby for about five minutes, while Terminal 2 uses a designated confirmation process.

Is Smart Pass required for self bag drop?

No. Regular self bag drop can be used without Smart Pass when the passenger and suitcase meet the airline’s rules.

Is Smart Pass self bag drop available for Korean Air?

The airport’s current Smart Pass self bag drop list names Jeju Air, T’way Air, Jin Air and Air Seoul. Korean Air passengers can still use regular self bag drop when eligible.

What happens if the self bag drop counter is closed?

Go to the staffed airline counter immediately. The self check-in kiosk may remain available even after baggage acceptance has closed.

Self bag drop is fast when the boarding pass, passenger and suitcase are already eligible.

It becomes slower than a normal counter when travelers join the line without checking the baggage allowance, route restriction or operating time.
